Saratoga’s Grand
Summer 2008
by Dick Healy
One of the main topics of
conversation this week in Saratoga Springs is about a horse named Curlin:
undisputedly recognized by many as the greatest living race horse currently
competing. Visitors to the famous Race Course will get a chance to see
Curlin in the final week of the 2008 race season when he runs in Saturday’s
Grade 1, $500,000 55th Woodward Stakes.
If Curlin wins the race, it will be his
sixth straight Grade 1 victory which includes the $1 million Preakness, the
$750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, the $6
million Dubai World Cup and the $1 million Stephen Foster Handicap.
According to the New York Racing
Association (NYRA) this “ Once in a lifetime opportunity to watch Curlin run
at Saratoga will also turn into the “Bet of a Lifetime” for one fan,
courtesy of The NYRA. Patrons can stop by the NISSAN of Saratoga to register
for a chance to win a variety of prizes including lunch for two, paddock
passes and the ultimate prize: a $1,000 betting voucher. The voucher for
$1,000 must be wagered in its entirety on Saturday’s Woodward Stakes at
Saratoga.”
The first 20,000 fans on Saturday will also receive a special commemorative
Curlin poster designed by nationally renowned artist Peb Bellocq.
The track will run through Labor Day and
NYRA will thank fans for their support by offering free grandstand admission
on the final day, Monday, Sept 1.
Part of the day’s special celebration will
be a Labor Day barbecue, with adult paying $20 and $14 for kids 3 to 12. It
will be held at the Rail and Paddock Pavilions. The price includes
Clubhouses admission and an official “Post Parade” program.
You might want to take advantage of many sales taking place at Saratoga
downtown stores: One of the best shops to find deals is at Impressions of
Saratoga at 368 Broadway.
The Saratoga experience, though mostly
highlighted during racing season, goes on year-round. The fall season with
its brilliant colors is especially rewarding. And, of course, you can visit
the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Union Avenue.
