Saratoga Scene
by Dick Healy
It looks like early spring is arriving in Saratoga Springs, New York. Budding trees along Union Avenue where the historic Race Course is located, and no snow on the ground, is a sure sign that winter wasn’t all that much this year. So what’s in store for the track this summer?
According to Mark Bardack, President of Ed Lewi Associates, “The 2016 Saratoga thoroughbred racing card will be a 40-day meet. It will feature the Grade 1 Whitney on Saturday, August 6 and the Grade 1 Travers on August 27. Racing will begin Friday, July 22 and conclude on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, with racing conducted six days a week, Wednesday through Monday.”
What attracts race goers to Saratoga is the quality horses. What attracts owners and trainers to Saratoga is the purses. For example, here’s the money offered.
- The Whitney, $1.25 million.
- The Travers, $1.25 million.
- The Jim Dandy, $600,000
- TVG Diana, $500,000
And the list goes on.
