Gore Mountain Revisited
By Fred McKinney
A trip to Gore offers families a full skiing experience in the Adirondack
Mountains of New York.
Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY is a short drive from the Lake George
region and around 1 1/2 hour drive from the New York State Capital of Albany, New
York. Gore offers over 2600 feet of vertical drop with terrain for all
levels of skiers and is a full service ski resort. Skiers will find well
groomed green and blue level trails and experts can find their challenge
with expert and double black diamond trails. Snow quality is consistent with
snowmaking covering over 95% of the mountain terrain on all level of trails.
Gore has 15 lifts servicing over 112 trails skiable trails on 438 skiable
acres. Lifts vary from the 8 passenger Northwoods Gondola, to multi
passenger chairlifts and triple and quad high speed chairlifts along with
surface lifts for all levels of skiers. In recent years, Gore Mountains
expansion has brought a skiable ski connection down to the hamlet of North
Creek through the old and original North Creek Snow Bowl. The Ski Bowl base
area also includes a tubing park. From the bottom of the Snow Bowl, shuttle
service is now available for skiers that want to explore the town and sample
the variety of eateries along Main Street. Skiers can take the shuttle back
to the Snow Bowl area and take the Hudson Chairlift from the village to
reconnect to the main mountains trail network on Gore. This gives a European
flare and charm of skiing by enjoying lunch or village actives in town.
Gore, also offers a variety of cafeteria lodge food as well as a pub eatery
at the mountain.
Gore is one of the leading destination ski resorts in New York state and now
competes with the major New England resorts for skier day visits. According
to Scott Brandi of the Ski Areas of New York, Gore probably offers the
most diverse skiing in New York State and is comparable to any of the large
New England ski resorts. This new level of skiing is possible with the
recent expansion of the area. The Saratoga to North Creek Railroad offers a
skiers train from Saratoga on weekends and holidays. This train connects
passengers to Amtrak service from the Saratoga Springs, NY railroad station.
The train arrives in North Creek, where it's met by hotel shuttles and taxis
taking visitors to their hotels and around the town. The present train
service is fashioned after the famous skiers train that operated in the
1930s,40s & 50s bringing skiers by the hundreds to the old North Creek Snow
Bowl and North Creek for winter holidays.
Gore Mountain and North Creek capture the Adirondack quality of life, a
winter holiday that can be a lifetime memory!
