At a recent gathering of media and distinguished guests in the American Natural History Museum in NYC, Switzerland Tourism hosted a showing of a spectacular IMAX film, “The Alps.”
Sweaty palms, wide-eyed admiration and an awed silence greeted the end of the film. This was not your typical show and tell travelogue about the beautiful mountain range in Switzerland—not even close.
This film was about John Harlin III’s climb of the dangerous North Face of the Eiger. A poignant tale which began 40 years ago when John’s father fell 4000 feet to his death because of a frayed rope; reenacted to believability.
John Harlin III was in attendance at the showing and with quiet emotion explained why he and fellow climbers Robert and Daniela Jasper ultimately persevered in this climb. Those with weak hearts need to hold on tightly when watching the 6th MacGillivray Freeman Film series of Great Adventure Films. I have not seen the others, but I can’t imagine them being more dramatic.
